LSV summer education roles up for grabs

If you are passionate about water safety, looking for casual education-related work over the summer and dream of spending your days by the water, Life Saving Victoria (LSV) has the job for you!

LSV is hiring Open Water Learning Experience (OWLE) program instructors and team leaders, Sink or Swim (SoS) program leaders and multicultural beach program instructors, to deliver water safety programs at Victoria’s beaches, lakes, rivers and pools.

The roles are casual-based and flexible, meaning you can work as much or little as your schedule allows, with programs predominantly run Monday to Friday between 9am and 3.30pm.

LSV instructors come from a range of backgrounds and have varied experience, including as volunteer lifesavers, student teachers, sport and recreation and paramedic students, retired or semi-retired teachers and stay-at-home parents.

Leonie Mawkes has worked as a team leader, OWLE instructor and SoS instructor during the past six years and enjoyed working on the beach and sharing valuable safety lessons.

“You get a great sense of satisfaction seeing young people absorb really important water safety messages,” she said.

“I would recommend the role as a great summer job, spreading messages I am passionate about. My winter job is a desk job so I love the balance both jobs bring to my working life.”

Fellow OWLE instructor Claude Vautin, who has worked seasonally with LSV since 2018 said there is never a dull moment in the role and that he enjoys making a positive difference to participants’ lives.

“The work is fun and very meaningful, every session is with a new group of kids and the nature of the program gives scope to being imaginative to get the kids engaged,” he said.

“Being an OWLE instructor is a privilege, it provides the opportunity to make a difference to the children’s lives, making the teaching fun but at the same time driving home an important lesson.”

The required qualifications for the roles are:

  • Provide first aid and current CPR
  • Employee Working with Children Check
  • LSV community surf life saving certificate or Surf Life Saving Australia bronze medallion
  • Drivers licence (team leaders and education program leader only)
