The (health) training package containing CPR, First Aid, First Aid in an Education and Care Setting and Advanced First Aid have been reviewed by the responsible agencies and the new revisions became available on 15 Oct 2020. The changes are intended to:

• Better reflect industry best practice and current regulation;
• Ensure the scope and content are reflective of industry expectations;
• Address the role of mental health support in the provision of First Aid.

Registered Training Providers including LSV have a period of 12 months to transition (from 15 Oct 2020) to the updated versions of the courses or cease delivery. It is planned that LSV will deliver the new courses from July 1 2021.

As per WorkSafe / Safe Work Australia guidelines a ‘current’ CPR certificate is defined as having been issued within the last 12 months, and a ‘current’ First Aid certificate is defined as having been issued within the last 3 years.

 Position Statements

The position outlined below considers the impacts of the changes on training, employment, and the ongoing operations of the aquatic industry. LSV takes the position that for the purposes of:

• Operating as a pool lifeguard in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009 and a current HLTAID003 or current HLTAID011.
• Operating as a swimming and water safety teacher in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009.
• Operating as a supervisor of swimming and water safety programs in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009 and a current HLTAID003 or current HLTAID011.
• Operating with a requirement to be CPR trained in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009.
• Operating with a requirement to be First Aid trained in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009 and a current HLTAID003 or current HLTAID011.
• Operating with a requirement to be First Aid trained in an education or care setting in Victoria, an individual requires either a current HLTAID001 or current HLTAID009 and a current HLTAID004 or current HLTAID012.
