The first Water Safety Week and Beyond event took place at LSV on 4 September, to assist primary school teachers and aquatic facilities to prepare for Water Safety Week, 2-6 December 2019.
LSV Swimming and Water Safety Education Manager Liz Tesone says the aim was to invigorate school swimming and water safety programs to help prepare for a sensational up and coming Water Safety Week.
“The event was delivered as part of the Public Water Safety Initiative, which is funded by the Victorian Government and aimed to help spark new ideas for Water Safety Week activities, as well as inspire cross-curricular approaches for delivering the swimming and water safety components of the Victorian Curriculum for school students,” she said.
“The Water Safety Week and Beyond program offered multiple elective sessions throughout the day, which were presented by practising teachers and industry professionals.
“It also provided a great networking opportunity for schools to connect with aquatic education specialists, who can assist them in producing high-quality school swimming and water safety programs.”
While this was the first time the event was held, registration numbers were high and attendees came from across the state to take part.
“We had 157 registrations in total and attendees included Health/PE specialists, classroom teachers, principals and teacher aides, as well as swim school coordinators, aquatic centre managers and representatives from Maritime Safety Victoria and Aquatics and Recreation Victoria,” Ms Tesone said.
“Attendees came from 93 different postcodes including Echuca, Castlemaine, Colac, Hidden Valley, Mornington, Wodonga, Gisborne, Broadmeadows, Eltham and Dandenong.
“The feedback we received was very positive with many asking for this to become an annual event, and many also registering to be part of future water safety initiatives.”
