National drowning reports reveal rise in drowning deaths

Royal Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia have published the National Drowning Report and National Coastal Safety Report for 2019, examining the factors which contribute to drowning deaths and drowning incidents across the country.

The annual reports reveal, tragically, there were 276 drowning deaths across Australia during 2018-19, a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.

Of the deaths, 123 occurred over the summer period, which is a 17 per cent increase on the 10-year average.

There were 122 coastal drowning fatalities in 2018-19 across Australia, a 14 per cent increase in coastal deaths compared to 2017-18.
