Have you implemented your compliance program?
The Victorian Safer Public Pools – Code of Practice is now in place across the Victorian aquatic industry. The Code is a component of the joint Government and Industry response to Coronial recommendations, made by Coroner Audrey Jamieson, which stated that;
“With the aim of promoting public health and safety and preventing like deaths in public swimming pools, I recommended that Chris Eccles, Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, work with the appropriate area of Victorian Government to establish a central oversight and regulation body for public swimming pool operation in Victoria, to ensure safety standards are applied and upheld consistently across the industry.”
The aim of the Code is to provide practical guidance to those with responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. It is intended to provide consistency regarding the application and review of industry standards, bench-marking and reporting. The Code of Practice is the centre-piece of the Safer Public Pools project, which is supported by the State Government.
In order to be compliant with the Code, Facility Management and / or Pool Owners should now be ensuring that in 2019:
- They have registered their pool
- They have booked their Pool Safety Assessment
- They ensure all staff hold the minimum accredited training
- They implement the new Supervision Section of the GSPO effective September 2019
