Behind the scenes: Junior State Championships

Behind the scenes with Jonathon Holt from Mordialloc LSC

Jonathon “Jono” Holt has a concise message for his nippers heading into this weekend’s Junior State Championships at Lorne Surf Life Saving Club.

“Reward comes from effort, so go for it and most importantly, enjoy and have fun doing it,” he says.

Jono and his team are gearing up for this weekend’s State Championships, the biggest lifesaving carnival many of the nippers will attend this year.

He believes they are well-prepared and can’t wait to see them push their boundaries.

“I am looking forward to seeing some of our nippers achieve their season goals, whether it be to make a board final or win the surf race,” Jono says.

Having been involved in developing nippers for many years, Jono heads into his sixth year overall with Mordialloc Life Saving Club and is excited about seeing his young nippers grab hold of their season goals this weekend.

When asked what he enjoys the most about his role as the Mordialloc Nipper Team Manager, he knows his answer without any hesitation.

“I have been asked this question before and l will always say that with lifesaving, the reward is the development of so many young nippers who learn to overcome their fears. Watching them challenge themselves, in what is a very challenging sport both physically and mentally, is why I love it.”

With quite a few hours dedicated to the role throughout the week, Jono says to anyone that is considering getting involved in lifesaving, to just do it in any way that you can.

“It’s fun and kids are so fun to be around.”

The State Championships kick off on Saturday morning.

We wish Jono and his team the very best of luck over the weekend!

Behind the scenes with Kirstin Charlesworth from Fairhaven SLSC

With seven seasons under her belt as team manager at Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club, Kirstin Charlesworth dedicates her time and effort to a club she holds very close to her heart.

“The people at Fairhaven are a truly special bunch and I am lucky enough to get a chance to get to know a large proportion of the membership base as part of my role and have made lifelong friends,” she says.

As the Junior Coordinator and Team Manager for Junior Sport, her role at Fairhaven over the years has allowed her to watch many a nipper begin as an under six competitor and grow to be able to save someone’s life.

“It is a pretty extraordinary thing to be part of.”

Kirstin knows the preparation for the Junior State Championships this weekend has been a second-to-none effort by everyone at her club, with everyone excited to see their nippers finally hit the sand. At that point, she knows it will all be worthwhile.

With the host club of the State Championships, Lorne SLSC, just down the road for Kirstin and her club, she feels incredibly lucky for it to be so close.

“We have a great relationship with the Lorne team and look forward to a big group of nippers hitting the beach and hopefully bringing some great results back to the ‘Haven’,” she says.

Despite the nerves many of the nippers would understandably be experiencing, Kirstin believes a restful night prior to kicking off is the key to a successful event.

“A good sleep, some good food and plenty of water on the day in preparation, listen to your coaches about things like surf conditions, direction of sweeps, course and event instructions,” Kirstin says.

“And keep a smile on your dial throughout!” She adds.

Kirstin cannot speak highly enough of her position and thrives off a community such as Fairhaven SLSC. Despite the varying hours that she dedicates to her position throughout the year, Kirstin believes any position can be just as rewarding with the right approach and support.

“I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding roles that I have ever taken on. It’s challenging in terms of the time commitments at times, but with the right systems and supports, the rewards are enormous.”

The State Championships kick off on Saturday morning.

We wish Kirstin and her team good luck this weekend!
