Young Members Shine at U13 Development Camp

Fifty-six nippers representing lifesaving clubs from around Victoria have taken part in the annual U13 Development Camp which was held at Phillip Island, 16-18 March.

The camp is designed for 12 and 13-year-old nippers to:

  • Develop new networks and share ideas;
  • Develop confidence;
  • Develop communication and people skills;
  • Gain exposure to team building activities; and
  • Gain basic leadership foundations.

LSV General Manager – People Emma Atkins said the camp offered a pathway for participants to engage in lifesaving outside their clubs.

“For many of the nippers taking part in the camp, this is their first opportunity, other than competition, to be involved in lifesaving activities at a state level and outside their club,” said Ms Atkins.

“Each activity includes a development aspect that can not only be used within lifesaving and their club, but also in general day-to-day life.

“The camp also encourages participants to consider future development opportunities both within their clubs and through LSV, such the U15 and U18 camps, and to complete their Surf Rescue Certificate.”

Past LSV Building Leaders Scholar Teagan Thom has been a volunteer Camp Coordinator for around six years and says she enjoys seeing the nippers develop new skills and extend their involvement in lifesaving.

“We do a lot of teamwork activities, and it’s a great opportunity for the kids to make new friends and learn new skills.,” said Ms Thom.

“I really enjoy seeing them develop and go on to participate in future camps and I now have past participants returning as camp leaders which is great to see.

This year for the first time, the camp program offered a beach component which Ms Thom says was well received.

“Given the kids have all grown up around the beach, it made sense to offer activities that incorporated the beach and the water.

“They really enjoyed it and this was acknowledged in the feedback they gave us.”
