The Royal Life Saving Water Smart Award is a fantastic resource for schools and aquatic facilities to incorporate into the swimming and water safety programs. It is primarily targeted at primary school children in Years 4 to Year 6, however the supporting resources could be easily adapted to suit all ages.
The Award focuses on three key modules:
- Water safety knowledge
- Introduction to resuscitation principles
- Basic reach and throw rescue techniques
The Award is typically conducted dry in a classroom or playground as there is no requirement for practical work in the water. The Water Smart Award can be delivered by school teachers and teachers of swimming and water safety.
A Water Smart Award guide including lesson plans and activities, complimented by the Water Smart Education Toolkit is freely available for the community to access to support delivery. This also includes PDF interactive whiteboard formats for teachers to download and teach each unit of water safety.
On successful completion of the Water Smart Award students are presented with a Water Smart certificate as recognition for their achievement.
