After two days of exciting competition, the 2017 Junior Victorian Lifesaving Championships wrapped up with Mentone LSC finishing victorious overall on 367 points.
Ocean Grove SLSC finished second with 305 points and Mornington LSC were close behind in third place with 300 points.
This year’s victors Mentone LSC produced gold medals in 16 events across the two days, winning numerous board races, board relays and surf races along with some key individual events such as U12 Iron Man (Ethan Gorringe) and U14 Beach Sprint (Chloe Garifalakis).
Anglesea SLSC’s up and coming star Max Mauderer impressed crowds by achieving first place in both the U14 Board Race and U14 Board Rescue, along with three silver medals in the Beach Flags, Beach Sprint and U14 Iron man. Max also took home the Fred Westfield medal for best all round U14 athlete in individual events across the 2016/17 season.
Portsea LSC Under 10 competitor Cleo Richardson proved to be one to watch, winning four gold medals in the U10 Beach Flags, 500m Beach Run, Beach Sprint and Board Race. She also placed second in the U10 Wade Race.
LSV Director Aquatic Sports Rachael Rylance said it was wonderful to see so many of our young lifesavers giving it their all in the water and on the sand.
“Congratulations to all of our Nippers who represented their clubs at the championships,’’ Ms Rylance said.
“It was a wonderful two days of high standard competition and most importantly, great sportsmanship.
“We can see from the water and beach skills on display that we are in safe hands with our future generation of lifesavers.
“Thank you to all the parents, officials, water safety, volunteers and most importantly Warrnambool SLSC, who once again hosted a successful championship event.’’
