Life Saving Victoria is excited to announce that applications are open for the Open Water Grey Medallion Pilot Program, commencing on February 18.
Following the success of the Royal Life Saving Society Australia’s Grey Medallion program, LSV will be delivering an Open Water equivalent.
The program aims to engage beach goers, general public and members alike who have limited current experience and/or knowledge and understanding of open water environments and water safety.
Participants will walk away from the program with the knowledge from basic first aid to self-survival techniques; that are not only applicable on the beach, but can be drawn upon on a daily basis in a broad community setting.
The Pilot Program has been designed for the 55+ age group, acknowledging the varying experience and different learning styles that could be present.
The program will aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants to keep them safe in an open water environment.
It is expected that participants will represent a broad spectrum – the program will be relevant to a person who has recently moved into a coastal area, a grandparent, or a club member who has had limited recent exposure to an open water environment, wanting to refresh their skills and abilities.
The aim of this program is to provide participants with:
- Recognition of rips and other hazardous aspects of open water
- An understanding of personal safety when recreating around these waterways
- Understanding of safety and lifesaving equipment usage
- Basic rescue principles and when these are appropriate to utilise
- Basic emergency care knowledge
- Basic resuscitation qualification
The program will run over 5 session at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club and is free of charge.
