The 2018 Pool Lifeguard Challenge, held at Knox Leisureworks on the 7th September, was taken out by the team from Yarra Leisure, who provide lifeguarding services at Fitzroy Swimming Pool, Richmond Recreation Centre, and Collingwood Leisure Centre in Melbourne’s Yarra City Council.
“This was a fantastic opportunity to put our training into use,” says Yarra Leisure’s team captain Sam Murphy. “Lifeguarding is about teamwork and working cohesively. We were able to work well as a team today, which put us in good stead.”
Twenty teams of four lifeguards from around the state took part in the challenge, designed to test them in a range of emergency situations they may face at their aquatic facility. Events included a timed CPR assessment, first aid scenarios, rescue simulations, and aquatic races.
Second place honours went to Maroondah Leisure, while City of Kingston Lifeguards finished in third place.
“Water safety is everybody’s responsibility,” says Yarra Leisure winning team-member and lifeguard Simon Rohan-Jones, who was also awarded LSV Lifeguard of the Year, reminding all visitors to Victoria’s public pools to play it safe by the water.
With support from Laerdal Australia/New Zealand and the City of Knox, the Challenge was delivered by Lifesaving Victoria with help from Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA).
