Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club (S&LSC) took advantage of home-like conditions to take out the 2018 Open IRB National Championships at the weekend – creating history as Victoria’s second only National IRB title (last title 2010) winning by one mere point.
Thirroul Beach on the NSW South Coast played host to the event and turned on unusually strong surf conditions, which saw a day of racing suspended. However, Victorian racers revelled in the tough conditions when racing resumed on Sunday.
“Today’s conditions were challenging but for Victorians it was enjoyable, we like the cold,” said Williamstown S&LSC Team Manager Scott Ivey. “We are over the moon, words don’t describe. Our teams raced to their best and we are thrilled with the outcome.”
Williamstown finished the competition on 17 points, one point clear of QLD’s Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) on 16 points, and 6 points ahead of third place takers Kiama Downs SLSC from NSW.
Victorian teams did well across the baord, full results below, including South Melbourne LSC’s first in the Masters Male Mass Rescue and Barwon Heads/13th Beach SLSC’s first for their female team in Open Teams Rescue.
Fellow Victorians Frankston Life Saving Club finished in equal-eighth place with two points, while Victoria finished in third place on aggregate points in the combined State standings.
IRB pioneer and North Cronulla SLSC Life Member Harry Brown was farewelled during the competition, as his own North Cronulla IRB team laid a wreath in the surf off Thirroul beach.
Heavily involved in the development of IRBs, and a tireless all-round contributor the Surf Life Saving Movement, Mr Brown OAM passed away in May this year. Friends and family attended the competition and farewelled Mr Brown OAM’s honour.
Well done Vic!
