YMCA Plays it Safe by the Water with New Water Safety Hub

As part of the latest round of Play it Safe by the Water aquatic agency grants, the first programs for the year are being rolled out, including YMCA’s interactive Water Safety Hub, launched at the Boroondara Sports Complex last month.

The Water Safety Hub brings interactive games and activities to teach kids and adults how to be safe around rivers, beaches, lakes and swimming pools. YMCA’s aquatic experts are also on hand to talk about water safety messages while facilitating the activities.

“People are loving the roving Water Safety Hub; the reception has been really positive,” says Janelle Falkingham, YMCA’s Aquatic Program Manager. “Children are intrigued by the items on display, such as being able to try on life jackets, and are getting really involved in the interactive educational games. Staff have enjoyed using the hub to bring water safety messages to life and are really pleased with how adults are also embracing the messaging.”

Most recently, the Water Safety Hub visited Warragul Leisure Centre in the Baw Baw Shire Council as the Queen’s Baton made its way through to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The YMCA Water Safety Hub has been booked for festivals in March, such as the Somerville Family Day and the Knox Festival, to deliver serious water safety messages in a fun and interactive way. It will travel thousands of kilometres during the year to get the message out to as many people as possible.

Funded by the state government, the Play it Safe by the Water grant is this year also helping aquatic agencies such as Surfing Victoria, KidSafe, Australian Sailing, ARV and Triathlon Victoria, to create programs linking back to current water safety objectives.
