LSV’s Education Team was extremely busy over the summer period delivering key water safety messages to more than 33,500 students through both the practical Open Water Learning Experience (OWLE) and Sink or Swim (SorS) classroom program.
The vital information delivered to students ensured they understand the potential dangers found in and around their local aquatic environments and provided them with strategies to not only help keep themselves safe, but also their family and friends while enjoying the water. We received wonderful feedback throughout the season, including one Principal who said ‘I cannot speak highly enough of the program (OWLE); our children had an absolute ball and learnt incredibly valuable life skills’.
Recent statistics reinforce the importance of delivering water safety education, particularly in regional communities, with a 64 per cent increase in the drowning rate of those residing in regional areas in Victoria in 2015/16, compared to the 10 year average.
LSV’s Education Programs continue to increase in popularity, with the number of schools and participants almost doubling over the last year. With the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum in 2017 and the inclusion of swimming and water safety, as well as the endorsement of the OWLE program through the Australian Sports Commission’s Sporting Schools, we anticipate the demand for LSV’s water safety programs will continue to grow.
