LSV honoured at 2017 Migration and Settlement Awards

LSV has been honoured with the prestigious Sports Leadership Award at the 2017 Migration and Settlement Awards, held at Parliament House in Canberra on 22 March.

Presented by Migration Council Australia, the Sports Leadership Award recognises a sports code, organisation or individual that has developed programs or strategies to include new migrants and people from diverse backgrounds.

LSV was recognised for its Multicultural Water Safety and Settlement Initiative which has assisted in the development of water safety awareness within ethnically diverse Victorian communities, helping over 14,000 migrants annually represented by 300 multicultural organisations..

The Migration and Settlement Awards, now in their fourth year, recognise the hard work of organisations and individuals that assist new migrants and refugees to settle, to feel included and to participate in their communities.

Migration Council Australia Chief Executive Carla Wilshire said the strength of the list of finalists and the qualities of the winners showed the positive impact migration and multiculturalism was having across Australia.

“This year’s list is a wonderful advertisement for the benefits of migration and the richness that cultural diversity brings to all our lives,” she said.

LSV Multicultural Projects Manager David Holland said: “While water safety and aquatic education i are at the core of all our programs, the assortment of additional settlement outcomes for our newest Australians such as training, employment, volunteerism, community engagement and role model development are significant.”

Keynote speaker His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, recounted his incredible and harrowing boat journey to Australia, and the importance of migration and multiculturalism within the Australian community.

Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull was in attendance on the night, along with senior members of the government and members of the opposition.

Eight individuals and organisations were recognised for their contribution to Australia’s migration story, a list of winners is available on the Migration and Settlement Awards website.
